Welcome Doormats

Indoor and outdoor doormats are made of different materials because they serve different functions.  Low-maintenance outdoor welcome mats are usually made of durable, weather-resistant materials like rubber or coil. Rubber door mats are usually non-porous and withstand extreme temperatures. Coir doormats resist bacteria and fungi and are eco-friendly. Aesthetics and blending with a home’s interior decor are more important for indoor mats which aren’t usually as thick as outdoor doormats.  Indoor mats also are made from softer materials. Both types of doormats protect floors.

Outdoor welcome mats are a home’s first line of defense against dirt, mud, and moisture, keeping indoor spaces clean. Non-slip options reduce the risk of falling, especially in icy or wet weather.  They offer long-lasting performance and withstand heavy use. Eco-friendly coir is made of natural coconut fibers and is one of the strongest fibers in the world for doormats. It also resists the growth of bacteria and fungi. Its fibers make it great for scraping dirt, and mud off your shoes so it doesn’t get tracked inside your home. 

Molded rubber is a durable heavy-duty material that is almost indestructible and can be rinsed off with a hose. Its longevity is partly due to it being both heat, cold, and water resistant making it perfect for use in outdoor mats.

The best doormat for your entryway depends on your climate, your amount of foot traffic, and your aesthetic preferences. Coir and rubber mats are popular for their ability to withstand outdoor conditions.

For most doors, a doormat around 30 to 36 inches wide works best. For double doors or larger entryways, choose a mat at least as wide as the door frame, or use multiple mats.

Ideally, outdoor front doormats should be as wide as the door because then people who are coming inside your home can clean both of their feet without stepping off of the doormat. A doormat that is proportional and as wide as the door looks more polished. If a doormat is too small may not provide enough coverage and one that's too wide for the door might look awkward.

When it starts losing its effectiveness at trapping dirt, shows signs of wear, or doesn't stay in place properly, it's time to get a new doormat. A durable doormat made of rubber or coir fibers should last several years even with heavy use.

Most doormats are fairly easy to maintain and wash. You can use a mild detergent and brush for stains or stuck-on dirt. They can easily be hosed off with water or shaken for cleaning. Then let the mat air dry in a well-ventilated area. Pressure washers can damage the fibers in coir mats so don’t use them. Keeping them regularly cleaned will ensure they trap dirt and debris.

A doormat's lifespan can be increased by routine cleaning. Coir and rubber doormats are typically durable and last at least a few years.
