Jute Rugs

Jute rugs don’t hold up well outside and should be used indoors. Sunlight will cause a jute rug to fade, and when it rains, the water and humidity will cause its fibers to decay. It's vulnerable to mold and mildew, which will ruin the rug. Dirt will damage the rug and make it difficult to clean. It's better to use jute rugs inside your home. 

Eliminating any water and thoroughly drying it is the way to save a wet jute rug. If it gets wet, blot it using dry towels, and avoid rubbing it so it won’t harm the natural fibers. If you need to, use a wet/dry vacuum to extract moisture. Elevate it off the floor and turn on the fan to blow it dry. Sunlight could fade it, so avoid long exposure to the sun. Check it while it dries to ensure it doesn't get mold or mildew. Sprinkle baking soda on it and vacuum again, especially if odors develop. Bugs are attracted to areas that are damp or hold water, and since jute rugs are made from plants,  they create a favorable environment for bugs when they’re used outdoors. Bugs sometimes like to hide in the rug’s weave. Vacuum and clean your jute rug often, keep it indoors,  and make sure it stays dry, and you won’t get bugs. 

You can vacuum your boucle jute rug, but make sure you’re gentle when you do. Ensure you use a low suction setting, you don’t damage the jute fibers. Vacuuming can remove the trapped dirt, debris, and dust that collect in the weave. Flip your rug over and vacuum the other side to remove all the dirt.

Using a rug pad will give your jute rug stability and limit friction against the floor, which can cause shedding. Shedding is fairly normal in a jute rug, but will be reduced if you regularly vacuum it.  

A jute rug can be professionally cleaned, but ensure the cleaner knows how to clean natural fibers. Improper cleaning can cause it to shrink, get discolored or damage the fibers. Using harsh chemicals can fade the rug or damage it.
